FOREX MARKET
On November 16th, the greenback enforced vs. the euro, as the exchange rate eroded once again the 1.1660
support, however less powerful than the day before, as US Consumer Price Index for October was out at 0.2%
vs. 0.0% expected. On Thursday, the EUR/USD dropped until 1.1638 in early trade, however by noon the
exchange rate climbed back to the 1.1680-1.1690 levels.
Yesterday, there was a quiet local forex session with low traded volumes. The euro appreciated until 3.6450,
on the back of buying orders from importers. Today, the market opened at 3.6400 level, however until noon
the exchange rate gradually fell until 3.6320 area, as it seems that the players on the local market lost interest
for the euro purchases. Dealers believe that in the medium run, the NBR won�t allow the EUR/RON to
approach the 3.7000 area anymore, so they will make a depo auction whenever necessary.
MONEY MARKET
The NBR did not sterilize the RON surpluses from the local money market today. Due to this, the overnight
interest rates stand in the 1.8-3% area. Yesterday, the Central Bank issued the quarterly report on inflation and
in the press conference organized by this occasion, Mugur Isarescu reaffirmed NBR's intention to increase the
interest rates by withdrawing larger amounts from the inter-bank market.
