FOREX MARKET
Yesterday afternoon, the US Trade Balance for October was released and shortly after the market reacted by
selling the dollar, taking the rate to 1.2060, the highest. Although there was the highest trade deficit ever, the
dollar held pretty well overnight and recovered to 1.2000 level. The main issue is now whether the Fed will
hike again at its next FOMC meeting, as their declaration left space for different interpretations. Feds next
governor, Ben Bermanke must be extremely prudent and base its rate decision on macroeconomical data.
There was a rather calm local trading session on Wednesday, as the range area was rather limited and the
RON gained some ground in the afternoon. Today, the forex market opened at 3.6420, then dropped lower to
3.6380 and then the EUR/RON stabilized in the 3.6420-3.6440 area. It seems that the hard currency inflows
outpaced the amounts bought by importers and speculators who are marking their profits at the end of the
year.
Until Christmas, we expect to see the EUR/RON traded for 3.6000 or even lower as the most of the imports
are done.
MONEY MARKET
In the early morning, the ON stayed in the 2-4% area, however the situation changed after the results for the
three-month CD auction were made public. The NBR withdrew RON 5bln, at an average accepted yield of
7.39%. Shortly after NBRs intervention, the overnight interest rates soared to 4-7%.
