FOREX MARKET
The USD avoided an accelerated fall on Friday as the Current Account balance for Q3 came out smaller
than expected. The EUR/USD is looking comfortable in the 1.2000 area for the time being. We prefer a
move higher, with a removal of the 1.2070 resistance. This week will be a key one for US housing data as
we have US Housing Starts and Building Permits up tomorrow.
On December 16th, the euro appreciated on the local forex market until 3.6650 as the players preferred to
purchase the EUR. At this level, the clients decided to sell the euro and the exchange rate dropped until
3.6500. On Monday, the market opened at 3.6550 and then gradually the EUR/RON fell until 3.6430, as
the RON was enforced by NBRs depo auction.
MONEY MARKET
The ON interest rates stood at 2-4% before NBRs depo auction. The National Bank decided to sterilize the whole offer of the commercial banks for the first time in the second semester of 2005. The withdrawn
amount stood at RON 4.7bln at the 7.5% intervention rate. After the results of NBRs intervention were
made public, the ON interest rates increased to 5-7%.
