FOREX MARKET
On Friday, the EUR pushed a little bit stronger vs. the American dollar, as it reached as high as 1.2207. We do not
have much data out today, so we expect the EUR/USD to be range bound in the 1.2150-1.2200 area. It is important in
case the recent EURUSD rally should continue that the 1.2092 level remains intact which would increase the
likelihood of new heights this week and technically support the building of a new base in the 1.2200 area.
The domestic currency showed signs of recovery at the end of the week, as it seems that the foreign players remained
confident in the high revenues prospects of the Romanian market. RON purchases took the pair back in the 3.5900
area, but not for long as the importers took advantage of the low levels for their future acquisitions and the bids
climbed until 3.5100 zone. On Monday, the market opened in the 3.5100 area and stayed flat ranging less than 50
pips, as the players seem prudent before the result of the depo auction will be announced. We expect that the NBR
will withdraw a substantial amount today, however the allotment percentage might not outpace 80% of the overall
offer coming from the commercial banks.
MONEY MARKET
The ON interest rates stay in the 2-5% area before the announcement of the sterilization operation held by the
National Bank, as the liquidity in the Romanian market has been extremely high recently. We expect that the short
term yields would rise steeply until March 23rd, however not as drastically as the month before as the banks will be
more cautious this time.
Starting March 9th, Finansbank has hiked the interest rates for the domestic currency deposits, offering the best
yields in the market for most maturities.
