FOREX MARKET
There was a calm forex session on Monday, with the EUR/USD traded within the narrow range of 1.2075-1.2130, as
the players are prudent before the US trade balance which will be released tomorrow. The US figures might set the
trend the days ahead and after the Easter holiday. It seems that the market switched interest again towards the rate
differentials between EUR and dollar, putting aside the uncertainties regarding the future developments of US,
however we expect that this optimism would not last long.
The domestic currency strengthened against the euro on April 10th, testing the 3.4900 support which held up until
now. As the Romanian market widened in the last months, it takes larger transacted volumes to move the exchange
rate, therefore we expect a smooth appreciation of the RON until 3.4800 in the days to come on back of foreign
remittances specific for Easter. Today, the opening bids stood at 3.4950, then moved slightly lower towards 3.4900
zone where it halted, same as yesterday. Around noon, the EUR/RON seems to be dead-locked in the 3.4950 area.
MONEY MARKET
On Monday's depo auction, the National Bank withdrew the whole offer of the commercial banks amounting to RON
1.7bln. The sterilization operation had no impact on the domestic interbank market, as the ON yields remained flat at
8-9% levels.
