FOREX MARKET
On Thursday, there was released the US GDP for Q2 which came out well below the expectations of the market,
revealing that the US economy is losing steam. However, the dollar seems not to be affected by the recent
disappointing data on US, as the interest rate differentials is still supporting the USD together with the inflationary
risks resulting from core CPI. In early European forex session, the EUR/USD was bided for 1.2700 level, but towards
noon time the pair slipped downwards to 1.2670-1.2690 zone.
On September 28th, EUR/RON was traded in a tight range between 3.5330-3.5410 levels amid calm trading session.
On Friday, the domestic market opened slightly higher at 3.5380 level which seems to be well-offered as the bids
varied less than 50 pips until noon time. The decision of the EC to welcome Romania into EU starting from January
2007, was priced in by the foreign players long time ago, therefore the good news did not trigger any significant offshore
activity. However, by joining the EU, Romania is likely to benefit on the medium term, as important foreign
direct investments will impel the economy and support the domestic currency to appreciate.
MONEY MARKET
The overnight interbank rates stay in the 8-9% area on September 29th, as a deposit worth RON 2.3bln held at NBR
reached to maturity on Thursday.
